Third And Fourth Class News
It’s hard to believe that Easter is here already! Time flies when you are working hard in 3rd and 4th class!
It’s been a great term. To kick it off we spent a lot of time learning all about the Titanic. It was fascinating to learn about the doomed voyage and all the important and interesting people on the ship. It was a real treat to go to the Titanic Artifacts Exhibition in Dublin. You could almost imagine how it felt to have been on the ship.
We also spent much time considering our health this term. It fitted in nicely with our Lenten promises as we all gave up something that was not good for us. We learned all about the heart and how it works. It is so important to remember to get your five a day of fruit and vegetables in order to keep healthy. Some other tips for staying healthy are:
• Drink lots of water and avoid sugary drinks!
• Only have a treat once in a while and remember it’s not a treat if you have one every day!
• Try to do some light exercise every day!
To continue on our healthy buzz, we look forward to trying out potatoes, lettuce, spinach, strawberries and carrots we planted this term.
Multiplication tables were a big focus this term and we have really improved! We still have to keep practicing them all the time to make sure they are fresh in our minds, but are ready for challenge of learning the division tables next term.
We wish you all a happy and healthy Easter!

We have had a very busy time in third and forth class since September, and with the Christmas concert only around the corner it looks like things are just picking up speed!
After settling in we put in huge effort into working on our family trees. Some of us managed to trace back to our great, great grand parents and we found our lots of interesting things about what life was like for them all those years ago.
It’s been a rainy term and we spent some time learning about the water cycle to see why this water just won’t go away!
We received letters from children in Zambia and wrote back to them. We are waiting on a reply and looking forward to getting more letters back.
We wish everyone a happy Christmas and all the best in the New Year.

Hope everyone enjoys their summer holidays! See you all in September!

Wow, it’s hard to believe that the last term is here already! Where has the year gone!? Here in 3rd and 4th class we have been busy as always! Last term we planted potatoes and strawberries and are really looking forward to harvesting them soon.
We also did a massive project on the Romans and learned some pretty cool stuff about them including that the city’s founders, Romulus and Remus, were raised by a wolf and that the Romans favourite pass time was watching bloody sports in the Colosseum! Keeping in this theme, we are looking forward to cooking some traditional Italian food this term.
As we prepare for the First Holy Communion, it’s all go for the school choir and second class pupils. All in 3rd and 4th class want to wish 2nd class the best of luck in their prepration!

In 3rd and 4th class there has been a lot going on. The class have been working hard on their Texaco Art Competition entries and all the pictures look amazing!
We have also been working on making our own radio advertisements and recording them onto tapes! It has been loads of fun.
We look forward to having an Art Teacher named Anja coming into the class for the next 6 weeks. Anja will be teaching us about photography which we are all excited about!
In Geography, we have learned all about the counties of Ireland, all can be sure that none of 3rd/4th class will get lost travelling in this country!

As we come to the end of a busy term, it is nice to look back on all the good things that have happened. Our class took part in the Hallelujah concert in the RDS this month and it was amazing. We had to learn lots of different songs to perform and it was such fun! We also did a dance with the Urban Stride Street Dancers!
Although we weren’t acting in the RDS, our class wrote and performed our own Christmas plays for Mr Keena’s class and Ms Flannery’s class. The two plays were a great success.
In History, we learned about the great explorers, Christopher Columbus and Tom Crean. Did you know that Tom Crean was from County Kerry?! And also that he explored Antartica and became a hero.
Everyone in third and fourth class would like to wish every a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2009.

It’s hard to believe it’s already Halloween! We’ve been so busy we didn’t notice the time flying by! A lot of the children in our class had dental appointments this term so we explored all about the tooth and keeping our teeth clean. Did you now enamel is the hardest substance in the body?
There are some tips for that perfect smile:
• Brush twice a day for 3 minutes.
• Brush using small, gentle, circular movements.
• Floss every evening if you can.
• Avoid sugary snacks between your main meals!
In art we took part in the Discover Athlone Art Competition. We all worked so hard at it and produced great pictures! Shane’s picture stood out for the judges and he won first prize in his category, winning a brand new bike! Congratulations Shane, we’re all so proud of you!
Congratulations also to all who took part in the cross country races in Mullingar in September!
Coming up to Halloween, we have been talking a lot about being safe on the night. Here are some ideas:
• Always bring a torch when trick or treating.
• Wear a costume that fits and stand back from candles, fireworks and bonfires.
• Always let an adult know where you are.
• Keep your pets in for the night, making sure they’re warm and safe.
• Eat a good healthy dinner before heading out trick or treating and don’t forget to brush your teeth after all your treats!
Halloween art will soon be added to the picture gallery! Check it out.

After a long and relaxing Summer, it’s all go in Ms. Mullins’ room. We’ve had great fun learning more about our local town and community in Geography and have worked hard on our Discover Athlone Art competition.
After a great day at the Cross Country Championship in Mullingar last year, we’re all geared up and ready to give our all in the same on Wednesday.
Congratulations to Patrick who came first in his boxing competition on Monday 22nd September.

We have been very busy in third and fourth class. This term so far we learned all about Australia! It was great to see how the people down under live! We discovered that they have many different animals not found anywhere else in the world. The internet was a great help when we went to look up information.
In Irish our class have taken to learning an Irish Rap! It has been great fun and we are going to try and get a record deal with Simon Cowel!
We did a very interesting investigation into the amount of sugar in fizzy drinks. Did you know that there are 13 and a half teaspoons of sugar in a small can of Lucozade!?! We were shocked to see all the sugar laid out on plates. We also spent some time looking at mini-beasts under microscope. We were able to see the thorax and the abdomen, and count the legs. It was great to get such a close look at them and we had a lovely sunny day for it!
In maths recently we have been studying Length. We measured the perimeter our new football pitch. It is 192m in total and some of the class can run around it in 59 seconds! Now that ‘s fast!
Heading into the Summer months now, we are all excited about swimming, the school tour and sports day! We look forward to letting you know how they all go!
