Tackling Water Conservation

We are now looking at the concept of Water Conservation:

Firstly, we have been learning all about water, its importance to us as human beings and to all living things.

We have had a water machine installed in the school to ensure that all children get sufficient water breaks during the day.  This again shows us the importance of water and it’s benefits, especially as it seems to improve our concentration levels! All excess water from our machine is used to water the plants.

We have had tests carried out on our water to ensure that it is safe.

We have been looking at water conservation tips and are in the process of creating fliers in our computer class to send home.

Our public relations officers are creating posters to put over all the sinks in the schools.

Our secretary, Anna Parkes, has agreed to interview a relation in Athlone town to ascertain how a member of her family coped with the huge water shortage in Athlone during the spring of 2007.

We will then be in a position to prepare a public notice board in the school on water and the importance of conserving it.

On a practical level, we:

- examined our own water (private well system).
- have checked if there were any dripping taps and arranged to have two taps repaired.
- intend to get an average of how many times the toilets are flushed each day to ascertain the water usage.  We will then, with the help of  the caretaker, fill litre bottles with water and place them in the cistern of each toilet.  This will mean everytime the toilet is flushed, we will be saving a litre of water!

We are looking into ways of collecting rainwater to use to water our flowers and plants.
